Since its release in 1954, “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” has inspired thousands of artists, as this original design clearly displays.
Here, the Creature is re-imagined by sculptor Greg Polutanovich as a large-scale resin bust - virtually a living, breathing nightmare - professionally finished, ready to display.
The Gillman was released back in 1998 as a highly limited edition by Michael Burnett Productions, Inc. of LA, one of many lifesize or large-scale portrait busts the studio produced. Polutanovich’s sculpture is brilliant, paying full tribute to the classic design, yet expanding certain aspects of the Creature’s appearance for unique visual impact.
There’s also a wonderful balance to the piece, an attitude, with a graceful flow to the gills and fins, helping to give life to a static sculpture. Indeed, the Gillman’s a pleasure to view from any angle.
Slickly cast in a thick-walled hollow resin, the fishy fellow has been meticulously painted in multi layers of lush color with a slick semi-gloss finish, just as you see him here. So, he’s ready to display the day he arrives. And remember, he’s a big guy, roughly 3/4 scale, measuring 13 ½” tall x 10” wide x 12” deep on display.
Long out of production (and lost at sea), Polutanovich’s Creature is no easy catch today – in any form. This one’s breathtaking. Ready to reel in the big fish?
